Steeple Chase

Today was long run day. Of course its one of the coldest days this week. All morning I was finding other things to do, trying to wait for it to warm up. It never really did. I took a big afternoon nap, which is unusual for me. But I am guessing its from the christmas season. After that I felt I had a little extra energy. Also my aunt called to ask me about my long run which was kind of a kick in the ass to get out the door.

There were many factors to make todays run harder. It was cold this is the first year the cold has really effected my cardio I guess its just me getting older. There was a blizzard that hit Winnipeg Christmas Eve and Christmas day so the streets were covered in snow. They had been plowed but the running paths were not plowed. I was losing massive amounts of power each stride. With the snow also comes snow clearing and I was going over snow banks and drifts some were a good 3 feet. I guess thats the best we get for hills. I made the best of it and it kept things interesting.

I started out not being able to get under the 8 min/mile mark. I had to calm myself and remind my self its winter now, and take into account all of the above. When I did get some dry pavement it was a treat I even ran a couple miles in the 7:20s. I was happy to be done the run today. Felt like I was running in a desert/steeple chase going over those snow banks. O well I got it done and I leave for Banff tomorrow so I am hoping to get some good runs in out there!

Paul Please Go Home

As far as I am concerned the month of December can be broken down into three parts. Before paul got home the week Paul was home and after Paul left. Paul is my brother he plays hockey out in Seattle Washington in the WHL western hockey league. Man does he have some stories. With him being away I started to miss him and he also was getting home sick. Also the rules are strict out there so he just really wanted to come home and hit the sauce with his brother. We partied hard really hard. I managed to squeak in training everyday but man I am happy he is gone. We were so busy I didnt even have time to write cause the time I did have I was probabily drunk.

Sunday:

Sunday was d-day so i knew i had to workout early. I did my lsd in the morning and felt great to get my bro for the afternoon. I grabbed him from the air port we hugged and laughed the whole way home. The night started and ended at the kings head which was amazing. The band there is phenomonal and we stayed till close and didnt hit the sack till around 2.

Monday:

Monday was good I had a chance to sleep in and get stuff done around the house. Paul and I went to the dentist. My workout wasn't till later at night so I had all day to recover. I had a good swim there wasnt many people so I got my own lane and really got to hammer. After that was done at 9 I went straight home changed and went straight to the bar and man did we party that night. The bar was packed and we had a blast Paul and my friend wheeled some girls to come back to our parents house. The party started again there with gutiars cards, and more booze we didnt shut it down untill about 7am that night. Tuesday morning was rough to say the least.

Wednesday:

Tuesday really helped me to feel better for Wednesday. Since I had nothing else to do I dragged Paul to hot yoga. He has done it before but it was really funny to have him there. The instructor asks the class hows everyone doing "great!! WOo" then Paul hungover " hjshfkhsdkI feel aweul" haha it was funny. After that I was feeling like streach so I hit the pool and had an ok swim. Later that night we hit the bar and yes again got hammered and home by about 4 am.

Thursday:

Thursday was now Christmas Eve and weather Paul was there or not I dont think you can stop the chaos ha ha. I was able to sneek in a 40min ride with Paul downstairs. So although not the full hour I was happy to get something done. I took position as dd that night which was good cause it still ended up a late one.

Friday:

Friday was Christmas Day and having my family plus a girlfriend with separated parents I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. HOuse to house. But we made it through I did drink this night and we played some blindfolded musical chairs. Absolutly ridiculous. Then when we got home I had some friends over and we finished partying till 3 am.

Rest Day christmas

Saturday:

Paul finally left today. ha ha. I think things will go back to normal no that hes gone and christmas is done. It felt good to have the christmas stress gone. I Just hung out on the bike and watched a cycling movie American Flyers. It was about 2 brothers I guess very well suited seeing as how I just saw my bro. Anyways I leave to banff on monday so I was just busy packing and prepairing.

Meant to be

The universe works in mysterious ways. I slept in today after the long night last night. I just slept till I felt good that's all, I woke up energized. I was sleeping at Kelcie's so I made my way home for today cycle. I fueled up and headed down stairs by around 3 or so. When I hopped on I noticed it wasn't riding as smooth as it should. Since I was going to be on here for 2 hours I wanted it to be running perfect. I figured it was something small just rubbing. anyways I ended up burning about a half hour adjusting the trainer and checking my drive train. I was starting to get really frustrated. But I then found a minor hole in my tire which had caused it to expand making a bump in the tire causing the rough ride. So I swapped it out quickly with a tire from my dads bike and I was on my way.

This delay had really bugged me. I just wanted to hop on and go. Once I started riding how ever I could see the reason for the delay. I turned on the TV and on the channel it was on the Ironman World Championships from Kona Hawaii were on. I had been following it on the forums so I had already known the outcome but I was still so excited to watch!!!

As I started to ride and warm up I was getting more and more pumped. NBC's coverage was really really good and they not only covered the pros but also captured truly amazing stories about ordinary people and the dream of completing the Ironman World Championships.

There was a guy who had cancer for 20 years of his life not knowing if he was going to live and he was crying at the thought of finishing. He missed the swim cut by 7 seconds. This brought a grown man to his knees in pain. There were 2 navy officers who had to do all there training on ships. One of them does 3 hr treadmill runs. There was a 58yr old women who had a stroke. And said everything is an accomplishment crossing the start is an accomplishment starting the bike is and accomplishment finishing the bike is and accomplishment. 2yrs ago she had to re learn to walk. On that day she was an Ironman. There was a boy with no legs he had to do the entire cycle using only his gluts. He missed the cut off by 5 minutes, still an amazing effort.

They also showed footage of old Ironmans, footage of (arguably) the worlds fittest people collapsing 400m from the finish line of a 140.6 mile race. There was one women this year that did not make the cut off and was helped across the line almost unconcious. But in the minds of the people that day she was an Ironman.

As for the pros, well they are just disgusting. Christie Wellington, and Craig Alexzander are both absolute machines. Christie didnt even have competition, she was racing against the course record. Craig Alexzander made up a 12 min deficit from the bike with almost no signs of pain on his face to join Mark Allen, Dave Scott and Tim Deboom as defending Ironman Champions.

Watching the race was probabilay one of the most inspireing things I have seen in a long time. My heart rate was even higher then normal. Although I had to cut my ride short to go to work I came home after just to finish, becuase I was so motivated.

Long Night

I am young and its friday night. Its a good day. Spent most of the day with the dog loungein aroung the house. When the afternoon rolled around things started to get real busy. I took Layla for a walk then I had to drop her off at kelcies while I went to grab some pizza. My friend Dave had invited me to the hockey game tonight so I figured it would be nice to have some za before hand. The game was fun we ended up drinkin at the bar in the arena but it was a good time. From there we headed to a friends house in the area for some more beers. It was good to see him open up a bit he has been going through some relationship problems. After that we still made it to a bowling ally for a couple rounds. kelcie has a friend that works there so it was dirty cheap and bowling is always a good time in winnipeg. All in all alot of ground was covered tonight. I hope it doesnt hurt to bad tomorrow.

Running Again

Its nice being unemployed and still getting paid. I spent the day running around to the airport to get a camera charger which I forgot in Saskatoon. Luckily they found it and I got it back and it still works. On my way back I went and picked up a bonus check for work that I did back in November. That was also nice to have for the holidays. And I also picked up a license for my dog which I have been meaning to do for a couple months now.

It was a beautiful day and I could not wait to get out of the car to start running. I decided today I was going to practice some active living and run to the gym. So I packed a back pack and headed out. It was actually nice out for once and I ended up taking layers off to cool down. For some reason though I couldn't seem to keep my heart rate down. I don't know if it was the extra weight of the pack, the cold ground and loss traction, or the cold air effecting my lungs. I have never really noticed the air effecting my lungs but I really felt it this time. I have also never really trained using heart rate so it will be interesting to do a comparison.

Yoga for Power

Well it looks as though just because I said I was going to blog in the afternoons, I am busy in the afternoons. Go figure. Yesterday was good I spent the morning running errends doing some christmas shopping kept busy. Its good to be busy because an idle mind is the devils playground. I had to do a bike on tuesday and I was really looking forward to hopping on the trainer again. This session was an interval session and, the new purchuse came through again. The resistance was smooth all the way through the accelerations and it did not slip once. It truly is amazing technology.

I was pleased to find that after the workout, cycling did not agrivate my groin. I am hoping to be running again by thursday.

Today was busy, I made my self a decent breakfast. I really appreciate a good breakfast, and I havent cooked one for myself in a while. A friend texted me from school askin if I wanted to go do hot yoga. I figured the stretching would be good for the groin strain. It was awesome!! It was 90 mins of hot yoga I must have sweat out over a litre and I felt really energized after. From there I came home and headed to the dog park. Its the first day it has been nice in a while so we walked around for a while and got home just in time to head to swimming.

When it came time to head to the pool I felt loose, long, relaxed the perfect feeling for swimming. The rest of the swim went really well I was swimming in the top 2 and seemed to have lots of gas in the tank. The water was cooler today which also made things easier.

Noodle

Well Monday sure felt like Monday after that staff party. Although I must say my groin is feeling better. I spent them morning finalizing things with the accountant for the ski trip. The last time when some one else was running it there were some issues with the budget, but we seem to have things back under control. The other co-ordinarier and I then went for breakfast at a little hole in the wall downtown. They always have the best breakfasts. I had recently read that bacon is one of the best things for a hangover. My guess is its the salt which is helping you retain water. Needless to say I felt better after break fast.

I thought I would for sure need a nap in the afternoon. But I managed to stay busy around the house and stacked wood for a couple hours. Being Monday I swim with the club at pan-am. I push myself to swim in the fast lane, but I didn't know how I was gonna feel today. I am very touch when it comes to swimming. I must eat 2 hrs prior or I feel like I am gonna sink. I still wasn't feeling fully hydrated so I didn't know what to expect. To make things worse the water was warm....again. I hate warm water it makes me feel like a noodle. Cold water keeps me crisp and edgey.

I puttered my way through the warm up and actually felt surprisingly good. One of the main sets was a broken up 1500m. They asked if I wanted to lead. I said " Open bar staff party last night, I am a dragster today running on top fuel alcohol. I will probably die out." Although I did tire a bit nothing to to bad and me and the other top girl managed to hold 1:30s and lap the other two swimmers.

All in all by the end of the day I was feeling good.

What a weekend

Sunday was a night to be remembered. The day started with sorness in my inner thigh. I think its the cold and the dehydration form the alcohol. It got to the point were I wasnt gonna be runnin. I took the day off and just iced it. Which seemd to have payed off today.

At night it was the pantages staff party and its so weird but so much fun. Its a potluck and free booze. There is so much good food and so much free booze. By the end of the night I had my manager playing tippy cup against me and the other bar tender. A bottle of gin and case a beer later we decide to head to my buddy robs for a few more beers and some online poker( Won $10 bucks). And then finally called it a night at around 4:30.

I think I am going to move my blogging time to mid day, and I will talk about the previous day. Tring to squeeze it in at night is hard because I never know when it might end. But in the day I am inspired to write more because I am not about to fall alseep. I will try and get a pic of the trainer up tomorrow as well.

Indoors was actually enjoyable

In Winnipeg with the windchill last night tempuratures reached -48C. Which is jusst ridiculous. But its a good thing I picked up my new trainer on friday and I spend the evening getting the basement all set up for my first session.

So with a movie on and the sweat rag hooked up and some food I was ready to go. I have done a lot of reading about these trainers but this was the first time I would actually ever ride one. This was probabily the most excited I have been to ride inside since I got my rollers.

I started up and I was amazed at the road like feel of the trainer. It would fight as you increse speed but as you got up to speed it allowed you to sink into a groove, just as you would if you were cruiseing down the road. If I but it into the harder gears I found that it would actually provide enough resitance to push me out of the saddle. This trainer it really going to help me increase my power I am extremly happy with the purchuse. The other key feture I noticed was how incredibally quite it was. I actually had to turn the volume on the tv down because I had overestimated just how loud it was going to be.

As I was watching the movie I started to play mental games. Sprinting when there was a car seen and doing slow cadance power builds during intense discussion scenes. I was amazing how fast the 2 hours went by. I will be looking forward to watching movies and doing my long rides. I used to dred it but when you have the right equipment it can actully be very enjoyable.

Green Machine

Most of yesterday was spent driving. I had ordered my new bike trainer from the states and I had to go pick it up. It was worth it I saved a pile of money. Its the new Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Its pretty sick. Its a fluid magnet trainer the resistance unit has two magnetic wheels in a fluid chamber and its the only trainer out there with no drive shaft. Another main feature is that the fluid in the trainer is actually liquid silicone and is thermodynamically neutral. Which means it does not become more viscous as you continue to ride and as it heats up. With this trainer it will not heat up and the resistance is consistent through out the entire workout.

I haven't had a chance to fully hammer on it yet but I will put in a better update when I do. In the afternoon I went for a freezing cold tempo run which felt pretty good most of the way but the cold air really began to take a beating on me after about 40 minutes.

I capped off the night playing poker with my friends, it was great, for the first time I made it to the top 3!! I played for free last night. I guess playing online is really payin off.

Calm

I felt very calm today I dont have much stress now. Its rather enjoyable. I spend the morning going over the budget for the ski trip coming up. It looks like I will be able to make it to banff again. Which is good cause I love riding out west.

I spent the afternoon cleaning out my vehicle and riding the rollers. I have gotten a lot better on them I can really feel my core starting to get strong again. I dont wiggle around as much. I can also feel the weights that I have been lifting starting to kick in I feel much more powerful.

Tomorrow will be spent going to the states to pick up my new toy. A kurt kinetic road machine. I cant wait to hammer a ride out on that thing.

Ok Back

I had my only exam today and for the last 3 days I have just been zoned out. Monday was wasted in a room but I still managed to blog. Yesterday nothing really happened and Kelcie asked me questions until I pretty much fell asleep.

Today was a true Winnipeg winter day. I was fucking cold. In the morning it was like -35 with the windchill and of course the car didnt start so I had to freeze my ass off and boost it.

I had wanted to get my workout in before my exam to help calm me but I ended up using all the time to study. Which is good cause I think the exam went well and I was able to swim after.

The swim felt good today I did a lot of pull. I am really trying to increase my turn over so I have been using the paddles. Its fun and new. Anyways I hope that since I am not forced to my room to study I will go have a little more fun.

Training as an equlibrium

Today if it was not for training I would not have much to talk about. Its the day after a weekend of hard drinking and I am being chased by the black dog. I guess that happens after 20-21 you dont just get hungover you get hungover and then midweek depression, haha I guess I see it as mental training.

I was up fairly early cause I went to bed early and got a solid nights sleep. I woke up well rested and fresh for monday. I spent the day studying and on my afernoon break I learned a new song on my gutiar. For the whole day I did not leave the house I barley ventured far from the computer. If it was not for swimming this blog would have to be about physical growth and aging/3200.

Anyways when I did go swimming I felt a little sore. My guess was it was from sitting in a chair hunched over books all day might have something to do with it. But when I got in the nice cold water of that training tank I was good to go. I felt strong I guess it was all the extra carbs. And I always have a drive to push through it if I feel off cause I enjoy going out and I dont want to let it effect training. Its a mental game I play with myself.

The rest of the swim went really well I am now swimming with the top 3 swimmers in the entire group. Last year at this time I was the slowest swimmer in the lane beside us. Not bad for one year of swimming. I swam a lot when I was younger so my stroke is decent but the power and fine tuning points just werent perfect. I had more running muscle. Now I feel I can get into the same groove as running while I am swimming. It feels good to have that centered feeling. Today training balance the day and it balanced my mind. What a great Monday.

Drink, Run, Party

Nothing could prepare me for the weekend that just happened. I was wondering on Friday why I was so fidgety. I spent most of the day Friday setting up everything for Cheif Sosore 1st Annual Beer Run. Inspired by The House Of Payne Beer Run I knew there was goning to be a high level of organization involved to get everyone motivated to run 5k. As the youth of today its not all in for physical activity.

This year I have done my fair share of races and I know what it takes to run one sucessfully. You have to think of everything from begining to end. So I had the course laid out with a pylon and road flares which were given to me from a friend and I also had a sign from the City of Winnipeg which read proceed with catioun road race in progress. Another key component was voulenteer help Kelcie was a huge help in tracking the time and keeping stuff clean. Others who did not wanna run also helped the race by slowing traffic at turn around points. We even had a pace car (with no time of course because it was prediction run).

But before the race started there was a christmas party friday night which I had to attend It was all the way out in Headingly Manitoba in the frickin middle of no where. And let me tell you country kids are crazy to say the least. There are no rules out there. They get hammered and then just drive to the next guys house. Needless to say it was a long night I think I got to sleep at about 6:30. And the beer run was in 8 hours.

I woke up at around 10....hammered grabbed a coffee and finished all the organization for the run. If it wasnt done now too bad cause the race is goin on now. I was a little worried about my performance cause I did not plan on drinking that much before hand. But as you know " At the time it just seemed like such a good idea". So to calm my nerves I went for a 5k warm up run haha.

Then people began to show up. the race was originally schduled for 2 in the afternoon but did not get under way till around 4. Which is fine I had anticipated that. I had a pre race meeting descrided the course and the seirs of events. Then it was time to blow the gun!

So we lit off a bunch of firecrackers and we were off. There were about 30 participants and everyone was laughing. At the start there were a few people ahead of me one of my buddies I used to train for half marathons with was running and determied to beat me but I reeled him in within the first km. The running was the easy part it was harder to drink the beer with the elevated hr. By the end out it I let out 2 self induced projectile vomits. I think there is some video it was good for a laugh.

During the race it was good to see everyone laughing and slappin high fives. And when the race was finished there was a real group sense of accomplishment. People were saying "shit we should do this every friday". And people that didnt even wanna run ended up doing 5k. Then we tapped the keg and the night really got started.

Awards were handed out for 1st 2nd 3rd male and female we also slowest run and person who needed most assitance which happined to be my half marathon buddy who threw up multiple times. And could not finish his last beer, well he did but his total time for the run was 1 hour 20 minutes.

It was a ton of work but it never went unoticed everyone came up and said thanks to me, and what an amazing job I did and how much fun they were having. Unknowingly my friends all chipped in a bought me a huge cake which was also an amazing suprise.

We stayed at the house till around 10 socialing and drinking beer from the keg. Running on 3 hrs of a BKO sleep and 2 keg stands later we decided to hit the bar. On the way there I actually called my friend Uncle Brian Payne in Toronto and he called me back this morning to tell me i just left him a message of jibberish. I guess I get an E for effort. There is no need to go into detail there it just got sloppy and we ended up taking rednose home. I was gonna run today but I realized it would really just be an ego thing so I have opted out and taken the day to study for an upcoming exam. Since my trithlon season is not even close to started.

Thank You to everyone that participaed and I hope to see you all next year!!

Tidy Up To Get Sloppy.

Since I plan on pretty much writing this weekend off I am working on getting as much done now as possible. So this morning I printed off a couple of sheets to help me organized the things I need. Then I went for a run cause I knew I would not get home till later. The run was good but it is now officially cold! I think its safe to say its gonna stay that way so no more skimping out on dressing up.

I left the house at 11 and I knew I wasn't gonna be back for a while. The first stop was a hair cut. I arrived early so I went the the store next door and got some stuff for the party. I then got the chop. I like my hair dresser he always makes it look good. Which is good cause I never really tell him what I want I just say cut it and make it look good. You cant do that at the mall but he is good at what he does.

Feeling fresh I needed to make a stop by the university and check some things to do with the ski trip and have some lunch with Kelcie. My downtown adventures were capped off with a doctors appointment. From there I needed to get home cause the dog had been in the back room all day and needed a walk. I enjoy walking the dog it is very relaxing, very calming... usually. But today was freezing not that it matters to the dog she just loves to be out side.

Now I am just stressing about the things I need to get tomorrow so I should probably go make a list.

Staying Productive

Today being a Wednesday I have a three hour class in the evening so I have to get my workouts done in the day. I spent the morning playing with the new dremal tool my dad bought. I filed back the drop outs on my cannondale fixed gear. I just bought a color matched chain I am gonna have to post some pics. Anyways I got the chain real tight and was also able to maintain good alignment.

By the time I was finished with that I headed to school cause I had plans for a more time consuming workout. On the way to school I saw a guy riding a motorcycle..... No helmet...... In a t-shirt! its Dec 2 I guess he just wanted the last ride. He looked well over 50 to. Haha Some people age so well.

The downtown YMCA has really grown on me. I never wait for a lane, the water temp is good, and they have accurate timing clocks. I had a good swim I really feel I am becoming more efficient.

After the swim I followed it up with a weight session. Which also went really well. My body is really taking well to getting back into lifting weights. In the summer I didn't do much weight lifting because of work taking away a lot of time.

Then I had my last class this semester it was good I just need a good exam mark now and I am laughin. The night ended playin poker with the guy. Which I am also gettin better at.

Preparing for winter

In Winnipeg winter is bad real bad. The temperatures are disgusting we get a bunch of snow but no where to snowboard, it gets blown off the prairies and forms drifts which always makes it hard for the snowmobile rs. It is awful. So I spent most of the day setting up my training gear, and cleaning out the car for winter. Brought up all my winter running clothes, took the battery out of my summer truck, cleaned the garage for the party this weekend and ordered a new trainer for my bike(which I will have to take pictures of when it arrives)!!!

All in all I managed once again to stay fairly productive. My cycle last week was probabily the last one I will fit in out side this year today I moved down stairs and used the rollers for a quick workout. It is not riding outside but it was more enjoyable then last year. Last year I was really struggling to get into the groove but now training is just part of my life and it is no longer a hassle to squeeze in. I hope to keep it that way.
